Abstract: This article positions servant leadership (SL) among transactional and transformational leadership by reviewing the literature surrounding the servant leadership construct through 2022. We first define transactional, transformational, and servant leadership as distinct theories. The central focus of the article then outlines the history, characteristics, pervasiveness, antecedents, outcomes, and measurement of SL as found in the literature. The final section includes the opportunities for future research.
