Abstract: This conceptual study aims to identify the value of facilitating worker training in the gig work context from an organizational learning perspective. The explosive growth of gig workers has dramatically increased digital platforms’ reliance on these contingent workers. However, since gig workers are classified as independent contractors and only have a short-term contractual relationship with gig organizations rather than a long-term employment relationship, these organizations are reluctant to invest in gig workers’ training and other learning opportunities. This study explored the fundamental mechanism of training and development practices by adopting a theoretical lens of organizational learning. Based on the theoretical connection between organizational learning and training, this conceptual study examined the literature on training and development and on gig workers. The literature review findings highlighted three potential benefits of gig worker training: a) developing strategic human capital, b) ameliorating deficiencies of algorithmic management, and c) adapting organizational practices to gig workers’ unique characteristics. Based on these findings, the current study identified the focus of training for service and knowledge gig workers, respectively This study proposed to use training to address the needs of different types of gig workers and adapt traditional organizational learning to the gig work context.
