Reverse Mentoring for Sustainable Employability

Abstract: To meet the growing demand for longer professional careers, organizations today are increasingly investing in ensuring sustainable employability of its people. Despite the advancing practical significance, there remains a dearth of research exploring the role of human resource development practices/interventions in promoting the sustainable employability of the workforce. To extend the work in this direction, the current study aims to introduce reverse mentoring as one such human resource development practice that can be used by organizations to foster their employees’ sustainable employability. This study highlights the impact of reverse mentoring on sustainable employability by considering the extent to which the three core indicators of employability, work engagement, and affective commitment are covered in both the intervention content as well as the outcome measures of reverse mentoring programs. The influence of perceived organizational support as a moderator to the above-mentioned associations is further posited. The discussed framework is thus an early attempt to connect the reverse mentoring and sustainable employability literature. Key contributions and implications have been discussed.
